Starting game development with Unity
Beginning of a new journey
Probably sounds quite clichéd, so why not continue on the same track and say that I have always loved playing games. At some point of time, while playing of course, I was wondering what it would be like to actually make one, not just play games done by others.
This led to a situation where I started looking for information. The usual route, searching with keywords “making a game”, ending in some YouTube videos which show how to make a game or two. Easy!
Not really. The only outcome of this is a never ending cycle of tutorials, after all it’s way easier to watch than actually think and do stuff. Especially if the only time when I can do this is late at evening, or worse late at night, after having a long day doing work or studies.
To make matters worse, even though I have some programming skills, it always looked so easy and effortless in the tutorial videos. This ultimately lead down the path of self-doubt and strong feelings of imposter syndrome. Am I really not that good? Has everything that I’ve done been pointless?
Probably not… But when anyone of us has these feeling, and they try to learn new things at their spare time, it makes it extremely hard to succeed. This is what happened to me all these times, I just gave in under the crushing feelings of utter defeat that I had and thought that I’m just not up to it.
This all changed when I found out about GameDevHQ and their learning path to become a real game developer. They not only provide tutorial videos, but they also make you do the work yourself and hold you accountable for it. After all it’s me who wants to become a game developer. They also provide assistance and a community of other learners for those occasions, and I do believe there will be plenty of those, when I’m stuck with a problem that I just cannot figure out myself. That is why I am absolutely sure that I will succeed this time.
And so begins my journey of becoming a professional game developer!
